Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown. A brutal war of succession has plunged the court of Kingfountain into a power struggle between a charitable king who took the crown unlawfully and his ambitious rival, Devon Argentine. The balance of power between the two men hinges on the fate of a young boy ensnared in this courtly intrigue. A boy befittingly nicknamed Ransom. When the Argentine family finally rules, Ransom must make his own way in the world. Opportunities open and shut before him as he journeys along the path to knighthood, blind to a shadowy conspiracy of jealousy and revenge. Securing his place will not be easy, nor will winning the affection of Lady Claire de Murrow, a fiery young heiress from an unpredictably mad kingdom. Ransom interrupts an abduction plot targeting the Queen of Ceredigion and earns a position in service to her son, the firstborn of the new Argentine dynasty. But conflict and treachery threaten the family, and Ransom must also come to understand and hone his burgeoning powers—abilities that involve more than his mastery with a blade and that make him as much a target as his lord.…

Overall Book Review:

As book one of The First Argentines series, Knight’s Ransom is the perfect introduction. Jeff Wheeler is the kind of author who clearly immerses himself in his writing and as a result, the readers are transported to the worlds he creates. His attention to detail is a big reason for this, but he also has an incredible imagination. The knights, tournaments, duplicity, and a touch of magic make for an engrossing read.

At times it might become a bit overwhelming, trying to keep track of all the characters and locations, but with a few notes here and there and the provided map, you’ll keep it straight and in turn love how the various families’ lives intertwine. The characters are varied and well developed, especially the main character, Ransom. He is one readers will look forward to following throughout the series. Several situations, especially toward the end will have the pages flying as the suspense is almost too much to handle. We’re left with a highly suspenseful but satisfying ending. Those who enjoy medieval stories will love Knight’s Ransom and will be happy to know book two has an expected publication date of May 2021.

About the Reviewer

I love being able to help busy parents who just don’t have the time to pre-screen all their children’s books and know how much I appreciate it as my sons have gotten older. I feel very blessed that my amazing husband makes it possible for me to be a stay-at-home mother to four amazing boys. When not reading or enjoying time with my family, I like baking, especially trying new recipes, and the occasional sewing project.
