Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Seventeen-year-old Althea is the sole support of her entire family, and she must marry well. But there are few wealthy suitors--or suitors of any kind--in their small Yorkshire town of Lesser Hoo. Then, the young and attractive (and very rich) Lord Boring arrives, and Althea sets her plans in motion. There's only one problem; his friend and business manager Mr. Fredericks keeps getting in the way. And, as it turns out, Fredericks has his own set of plans . . . This witty take on the classic Regency--Patrice Kindl's first novel in a decade--is like literary champagne!…

Keeping the Castle

by Patrice Kindl

Overall Book Review:

Author Patrice Kindl borrows storylines from Jane Austen, characters from Cinderella, and a setting from I Capture the Castle.  The delightful result is Keeping the Castle and quite a bit of frothy fun.  With tongue firmly in cheek, Ms. Kindl delivers an assortment of characters with such names as Lord Boring and the Marquis of Bumbershook.  The protagonist, Miss Althea Crawley, is positively mercenary in her search for a wealthy husband to save the crumbling castle, which is her younger brother’s only inheritance.  However, Miss Crawley learns a bit along the way and quickly endears herself to the reader.  The story ultimately ends to great satisfaction–especially if one is a Jane Austen fan.  A perfect, quick, buoyant read!

About the Reviewer

An accountant and CPA by profession, I found myself a book reviewer for Squeaky Clean Reads by happenstance. When the opportunity came to transform that website into Compass Book Ratings, I was excited to seize it and meld my business background with my love of books. As the mother of three teenage sons, I have read a large number of children and young adult books and I believe that there is great value in a content review service. As much as we would love to read everything our children read, there just isn’t enough time. I also appreciate being able to select books for myself that are really worth my precious and limited reading time. I believe there is a book out there for everyone–they just have to find it!
