Author Patrice Kindl borrows storylines from Jane Austen, characters from Cinderella, and a setting from I Capture the Castle. The delightful result is Keeping the Castle and quite a bit of frothy fun. With tongue firmly in cheek, Ms. Kindl delivers an assortment of characters with such names as Lord Boring and the Marquis of Bumbershook. The protagonist, Miss Althea Crawley, is positively mercenary in her search for a wealthy husband to save the crumbling castle, which is her younger brother’s only inheritance. However, Miss Crawley learns a bit along the way and quickly endears herself to the reader. The story ultimately ends to great satisfaction–especially if one is a Jane Austen fan. A perfect, quick, buoyant read!
