Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Frey and Rafi are inseparable . . . two edges of the same knife. But Frey's very existence is a secret. Frey is Rafi’s twin sister—and her body double. Their powerful father has many enemies, and the world has grown dangerous as the old order falls apart. So while Rafi was raised to be the perfect daughter, Frey has been taught to kill. Her only purpose is to protect her sister, to sacrifice herself for Rafi if she must. When her father sends Frey in Rafi’s place as collateral in a precarious deal, she becomes the perfect impostor—as poised and charming as her sister. But Col, the son of a rival leader, is getting close enough to spot the killer inside her. As the deal starts to crumble, Frey must decide if she can trust him with the truth . . . and if she can risk becoming her own person. With Impostors, master storyteller Scott Westerfeld returns with a new series set in the world of his mega-bestselling Uglies—a world full of twist and turns, rebellion and intrigue, where any wrong step could be Frey’s last.…

Impostors

by Scott Westerfeld

Overall Book Review:

Due to the fact that Uglies is my favorite book series, I was ecstatic to get my hands on Impostors after discovering that it is the first of a new series following Uglies. Let me point out that while there are several references to the Uglies series, you don’t need to read them prior to this (although I highly recommend that you do) and Impostors is several years following the completion of that series. Being one who typically forgets details of a book right after reading it, Scott Westerfeld’s books don’t fall in that category for me. He has the ability to pull you into his worlds like no other with descriptions and details second to none. Westerfeld also leaves a lasting impression so you will continue to think about his books years down the road.

As suspected, my excitement to begin this series was justified. There is an excellent cast of characters, from the evil father to the strong protagonists who aren’t willing to go down without a fight not to mention all the supporting characters who fill their parts perfectly. The gorgeous and fantastic cities with their architecture, technology, and diversity will keep your imagination running to keep up. This is the type of book you’d love to see made into a movie but also hope they never do because there’s no way they could ever get the details quite right. Expect to be surprised and anticipate suspense as the story is full of both. Anyone who enjoys a dystopian novel will love and must read Impostors.

About the Reviewer

I love being able to help busy parents who just don’t have the time to pre-screen all their children’s books and know how much I appreciate it as my sons have gotten older. I feel very blessed that my amazing husband makes it possible for me to be a stay-at-home mother to four amazing boys. When not reading or enjoying time with my family, I like baking, especially trying new recipes, and the occasional sewing project.
