Future Shock is the story of five teens, their travels into the future, and their drive to change the way the future ends. While classified as a science fiction read, due to the time travel elements, I would classify this novel as a murder mystery. When the teens reach the future they find that four of the five have been murdered, and the remainder of the story is focused on trying to solve who murdered them and seeing if they can prevent their murders when they travel back the present.
This book is full of mystery and intrigue. The author came up with creative technology that the characters encounter in the future. While some of it may seem far-fetched, I have a feeling she is on the right track. Because of this, the future scenes are quite believable. The characters are well-developed, but are a little stereotyped: angry Latinas who can fight, foster kids who are angry and rough around the edges, and the nerdy white kid.
The higher age recommendation is due to content (see below) and the situations the characters encounter.
Overall a good read with an interesting plot line and enough twists and turns that the ending wasn’t predictable.
