Fenway and Hattie is the first novel for children that Victoria J. Cole has written. This book is adorable! It would be a wonderful read-aloud for parents with children from kindergarten until they are too old to want to be read to. Written from the viewpoint of the family puppy, Fenway, readers get an inside view of how a puppy might see the world. Coe tells how Fenway is confused about the new house and how he doesn’t understand why he’s now out in the country and not in the city. She does this without saying ‘in the country’ or ‘in the city’, but rather by explaining the sites the dog sees. Fenway does not understand a lot of words and is required to just manage and figure things out on his own. This gentle book would be appropriate for any age. The best part–it’s a dog book where the dog does not die!
