Publisher's Note:

A young woman must survive the deadly mythical creature she smuggled aboard an airship after a crash landing on a deserted island frees it to begin hunting the survivors in this thrilling fantasy adventure from New York Times bestselling author Scott Reintgen. When an airship’s windmaster dies mid-flight, the crew and its passengers are swept out to sea by a violent storm. They crash on a desolate island, but they’re not alone. A dragoness had been stashed in the hold. After escaping a damaged cage, it begins preying on the surviving travelers in the hopes of remaining free. The stranded group’s best chance of making it home alive is the young woman who smuggled the dragoness on board in the first place—and the mysterious teen boy who was led onto the ship in chains before takeoff. Both have secrets that could help them survive on the island…but those same secrets could deliver a death sentence if they ever make it home.…

Devious Prey

by Scott Reintgen

Overall Book Review:

Author Scott Reintgen is currently riding high with his New York Times Bestseller middle grade series Dragonships (The Last Dragon on Mars and The Rise of Neptune). In Devious Prey, Mr. Reintgen has a different dragon story in mind for a young adult audience. Think of the TV series Lost in a fantasy setting with an accused murderer, a brutal guard, shifting loyalties, multiple people with secrets, and a very, very deadly hunter waiting in the jungle. There is a lot going on and every character has their own agenda–even the two main protagonists, Pearl and Marken. Interestingly, Pearl and Marken are not instantly likeable, and while more page time fills in their backstories and definitely helps the reader understand them and their motivations, it doesn’t necessarily vindicate them. These characters spend a lot of time in the gray. However, rather than weakening the book, it keeps it fresh and engaging. Just exactly who are the good guys here?

The premise is a great hook, the setting is mysterious, and the plot is action-packed. There is definitely at least one twist that will catch the reader by surprise. Although the ending is a bit unconventional, it feels authentic and works well. It does not seem this book is intended to be the start of a series, but rather a stand-alone novel. Readers who like fantasy, mystery, suspense, and being on the edge of their seats will enjoy this original read.

About the Reviewer

An accountant and CPA by profession, I found myself a book reviewer for Squeaky Clean Reads by happenstance. When the opportunity came to transform that website into Compass Book Ratings, I was excited to seize it and meld my business background with my love of books. As the mother of three teenage sons, I have read a large number of children and young adult books and I believe that there is great value in a content review service. As much as we would love to read everything our children read, there just isn’t enough time. I also appreciate being able to select books for myself that are really worth my precious and limited reading time. I believe there is a book out there for everyone–they just have to find it!
