Avery the Dogless Orphan and the Interdimensional Stray by Prim Pawn is a middle grade, science fiction novel for dog lovers. Reminiscent of books like A Wrinkle in Time, this novel takes the reader on a journey to not only “other” dimensions, but on a journey of growth in the main character, Avery. Avery, an 11-year-old girl who lost her parents, wants more than anything, a dog to call her own. Little does she know that in another dimension, her kind and dogs are at war with one another.
As Avery travels to Beaver Island in Lake Michigan with her caregiver aunt, she learns more about who she is and the family secrets that are never talked about. Avery learns that things aren’t always what they seem and that sometimes one has to choose what’s right over what someone might say the rules are. She never wavers on her love for dogs and only hopes that her actions help to end the war and earn her the chance to have a furry friend of her own. Along the way she learns just how important family is and how she can make a difference if she only tries.
