An accountant and CPA by profession, I found myself a book reviewer for Squeaky Clean Reads by happenstance. When the opportunity came to transform that website into Compass Book Ratings, I was excited to seize it and meld my business background with my love of books. As the mother of three teenage sons, I have read a large number of children and young adult books and I believe that there is great value in a content review service. As much as we would love to read everything our children read, there just isn’t enough time. I also appreciate being able to select books for myself that are really worth my precious and limited reading time. I believe there is a book out there for everyone–they just have to find it!

Six Crimson Cranes is by far one of the best fairy tale adaptations I have encountered in quite some time.  That is perhaps because it is more of a "inspired by" and "mashed together with" incarnation…
Curses is a fairy-tale retelling of Beauty and the Beast that flips the script:  the beast is the girl and the beauty is the boy.  The reverse is fun and both of the protagoni…
The Other Side of Luck is a bitter-sweet, middle grade tale told in a lyrical style that would lend itself well to a read-aloud.  The style really was quite lovely and soothing to read.  The…
Fledgling takes the reader back to the delightful, magical, alternate history/world of Sarah Smith aka Cassandra in book two of the Sorcery and Society Series.  The book opens with…
The last year and a bit has been different--to say the least. But at least one can always count on a good read to make everything better. So, here is a personally curated, eclectic list of ten of ou…
Hopefully, Summer 2021 will be awesome. Here are a half a dozen fantastic reads for young adults that we recommend for the summer reading list. All these books have a content level of 5 or less in a…
Summer 2020 was not quite what we all hoped for, but the summer of 2021 is showing promise--especially for the road trip. Assembling this year's list, there seems to be an unconscious bias for escapis…
