This is a book for young activist artists who want to make a difference in the world through art (in all its’ forms), discussion, and expression. Matthew “Levee” Chavez, an artist himself, uses an upbeat, motivational tone to convey that anyone can be an ‘agent for change’. He lists projects that can be done in the home, at school, or in the community. The projects are set up with checklists and steps to ensure success, and yet are so open there is plenty of room for individuality and creativity. These are not your typical art projects; rather, he refers to them as ‘participating art’. The artist is trying to convey his/her perspective and opinion; however, he/she is also seeking the experiences and contributions from those around him/her – be it at home, a classmate, or someone in the community/world.
The text is easy to read and is broken up with pictures and thought sections. The message that young people matter and their ability to change the world around them is hit on in every chapter. I appreciated the chapter on safety, tips and tricks, and social media usage; however, I would still encourage adult participation with the projects – especially when it comes to interacting with strangers.
