Book Review

Publisher's Note:

“Love has a sound. It sounds like a thousand heartbeats happening at the same time.” Annika has lived a life of comfort as the princess of Kadier—but no amount of luxuries can change the fact that her life isn’t her own to control. The king, once her loving father, has gone cold, and Annika will soon be forced into a loveless marriage for political gain. Miles away, small comforts are few and far between for Lennox. He has devoted his life to the Dahrainian army, hoping to one day help them reclaim the throne that was stolen from them. For Lennox, the idea of love is merely a distraction—nothing will stand in the way of fighting for his people. But when love, against all odds, finds them both, they are bound by its call. They can’t possibly be together—but the irresistible thrum of a thousand heartbeats won’t let them stay apart. Kiera Cass brings her signature sparkling romance to this beautiful story of star-crossed lovers and long-held secrets.…

A Thousand Heartbeats

by Kiera Cass

Overall Book Review:

Kiera Cass is best known for her “The Selection” series, which was very popular in the early 2010s. Since then, she has released a few other books which have not had the same level of success. I haven’t loved the Kiera Cass books I previously read, so my expectations for this one were low. I was surprised to find that Kiera Cass has upped her game. I whipped through this book in two days, and while there were some plot holes, this is still a great book.

This story rapidly hooked me, and I quickly became invested. It’s certainly fast-paced, and although it comes to over 500 pages it’s so packed with events it didn’t feel long. In addition to the two point-of-view characters, there are about a dozen secondary characters who play significant roles in the story. In some books it seems you only encounter a handful of characters, or the main character only has a couple of meaningful relationships. That isn’t the case here. The author spends time exploring the relationships between characters, giving them different depths and dynamics. This made the characters really come off the page, and it’s something I hope to see done more often. Also, this book comes to a satisfying, if somewhat predictable, conclusion – which is particularly important since this is a standalone. The plot was the weakest part of this story. It’s predictable, and there are several obvious plot holes. However, I did feel like this was compensated by the characters and pacing. A Thousand Heartbeats is a good choice for most fans of YA, but it is certainly aimed at a female audience.

About the Reviewer

I was homeschooled from kindergarten to grade 10, which gave me a love for reading. Growing up books were an integral part of my life, and I’ve always been able to make time to read. I’m most widely read in YA fiction, but fantasy is becoming my favorite genre. My free time not spent reading is mostly spent outdoors camping, riding a bicycle, or otherwise enjoying nature. I’m also a science nerd with a special interest in entomology.
