Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Margaret Brinton keeps her promises, and the one she is most determined to keep is the promise to protect her heart... Fooled by love once before, Margaret vows never to be played the fool again. To keep her vow, she attends a notorious match-making party intent on securing the perfect marital match: a union of convenience to someone who could never affect her heart. She discovers a man who exceeds all her hopes in the handsome and obliging rake, Mr. Northam. There's only one problem. His meddling cousin, Lord Williams, won't leave Margaret alone. Condescending and high-handed, Lord Williams lectures and insults her. When she refuses to give heed to his counsel, he single-handedly ruins Margaret's chances for making a good match--to his cousin or anyone else. With no reason to remain at the party, Margaret returns home to discover her father has promised her hand in marriage--to Lord Williams. Under no conditions will Margaret consent to marrying such an odious man. Yet as Lord Williams inserts himself into her everyday life, interrupting her family games and following her on morning walks, winning the good opinion of her siblings and proving himself intelligent and even kind, Margaret is forced to realize that Lord Williams is exactly the man she'd hoped to marry before she'd learned how much love hurt. When paths diverge and her time with Lord Williams ends, Margaret is faced with her ultimate choice: keep the promises that protect her or break free of them for one more chance at love. Either way, she fears…

Promised

by Leah Garriott

Overall Book Review:

Promised is the stunning new Proper Romance Regency from Shadow Mountain Publishing. The debut novel of author Leah Garriott, Promised, is clever, engaging, and impossible to put down. Garriott excels with the story’s pacing and character development. Readers will find heroine Margaret relatable in her quest to protect her heart, as well as easy to like. Lord Williams, one of Margaret’s potential love interests, has a Mr. Darcy vibe, but the similarity between the characters ends there. The majority of the secondary characters are loveable, especially Margaret’s brother, sister, and best friend. Promised includes an additional love story and several scenes of witty banter. The tale did not have an obvious outcome and several twists and turns add an element of surprise. Promised is a stellar work and readers will be eager to read it again and again.

About the Reviewer

My mother was the one who sparked my love of books. Long before school instruction, she sat me down and taught me to read. My childhood was filled with trips to the library and bookmobile to find great books. My first loves were The Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Pippi Longstocking series by Astrid Lingren. Now as a mom and speech pathologist, I am constantly looking for good, clean books to use at home and in therapy. I enjoy reading many different genres, but my favorites are usually historical fiction. I married my best friend, the “boy next door”, and we have a beautiful little girl who we often find sprawled out on the floor, flipping through picture books. Together our family likes to swim, run and play tennis. Besides reading, I also love to bake, garden and travel.
