My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
The Puppy Place comes highly recommended from an expert in middle-grade literature. (That is, a nine-year-old boy I know recommended it as "the best series" he had read.) These charming books eac…
Since Interworld brings the creative genius of Neil Gaiman and Michael Reaves together, I expected a special kind of magic in this fantasy novel. The book does not live up to that high expec…
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a remarkable book. The depth of the story far exceeded my expectations. Seth Grahame-Smith paints a picture of Lincoln that is a portrait of strength, determination,…
With his first novel, Exeter, Ken Arthur brings us an action story with pacing similar to a Hollywood popcorn flick. The story moves along quickly, and keeps the reader engaged and wanting t…

I Am Legend is considered a classic in the sci-fi/horror genre, and modern horror authors frequently cite it and its author, Richard Matheson, as an influence on their own writing. This book was …
Black Beauty is unique in that it was told from a horse's point of view decades before it was popular to write books with animal protagonists. Sewell successfully captures the probable emotions o…
In The Rise of the Horde, Christie Golden introduces the reader to the orcs, a shamanistic warrior race who will need no introduction for players of the World of Warcraft video game. Go…
In The Gunslinger, the reader is introduced to Roland, the last in a line of noble warriors called The Gunslingers, an order who wield pistols with a prowess akin to a knight's swordsmanship. The…
Stu Truly is the first novel by Dan Richards. Sometimes, first novels leave a good deal to be desired, but that is definitely not the case for Richards. This novel offers a fresh t…
Fullmetal Alchemist is a fast-paced, innovative tale bridging the territory between science fiction and fantasy. This collected work follows the first stories of two alchemists, the Elrich brothe…
