An accountant and CPA by profession, I found myself a book reviewer for Squeaky Clean Reads by happenstance. When the opportunity came to transform that website into Compass Book Ratings, I was excited to seize it and meld my business background with my love of books. As the mother of three teenage sons, I have read a large number of children and young adult books and I believe that there is great value in a content review service. As much as we would love to read everything our children read, there just isn’t enough time. I also appreciate being able to select books for myself that are really worth my precious and limited reading time. I believe there is a book out there for everyone–they just have to find it!

Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White is the epic conclusion to the duology that started with Song of Silver, Flame of Night. This book is sweeping in its story and lyrical in its language with descript…
The first order of business is a shout out to the illustrator and the awesome cover art, which perfectly captures the vibe for this middle grade spy adventure book. The Misfits is just a lot of fun t…
Right from the eerie beginnings of this story in the decrepit and disintegrating Unnatural History Museum, the reader will start to sense that not is all as it seems. The author does an excellent job…
Starter Villian is my "starter" book for long-time science fiction author John Scalzi. I was definitely amused. Although this book is categorized as science fiction and published by Tor, it is less…
For some inexplicable reason I have been on the quest lately for a good Christmas read. This is apparently more challenging than it first appears. This might be because many Christmas books are orig…
The Emperor's Soul is a novella that won the 2013 Hugo award, which it justly deserved. This story is ultra-focused on really one main character with one character in a supporting role and a handful o…
