Book Review

Publisher's Note:

The Lost Library meets Not Quite a Ghost in this middle grade horror novel about a girl uncovering secrets about her new, haunted home. The only thing worse than having ghost hunters for parents is having fake ghost hunters for parents. Luna Catalano would know. Her moms are haunted house flippers who use their home reno skills and pretend psychic powers to turn spooky old houses into ghost-free modern homes. Not only does their job require the family to move all the time--meaning Luna is completely friendless--but the only thing haunting any of those houses is bad decor. For once Luna wishes there was an actual, for-real ghost. When they move yet again, Luna isn't expecting much. But this house feels... different. Things start out innocent enough--items not where they should be, strange noises--but soon things turn sinister. Her moms are waking up with cuts and bruises, and disturbing drawings showing them with even worse injuries are being left in Luna's room. With the help of her next-door neighbors and a mysterious woman who seems to know a lot about the home, Luna starts to piece together what exactly happened in that house before she moved in. But not everything is as it seems. In order to save her moms, Luna will have to get the story right before everything goes completely wrong. Stonewall Honor-winning author Justine Pucella Winans returns with another middle grade horror with heart about friendship, family, and the stories we tell when real life feels too scary.…

A Little Too Haunted

by Justine Pucella Winans

Overall Book Review:

In A Little Too Haunted, Justine Pucella Winans delivers another paranormal tale with a unique premise. This story of Luna Catalona, the daughter of two women who have made their modest fame flipping haunted houses, is one of ghostly mystery and angsty teen coming of age. Young readers are likely to identify with several aspects of Luna’s personality that are common to most teens – the need for acceptance, a desire to be seen, and a quest to find out where they fit in the world. As Luna searches for friends and a place to belong, she struggles with other conflicts not as common to all teens, such as what to do when your house is well and truly haunted for real. This complication makes meeting friends, and keeping them, a bigger challenge than usual, and the stubborn persistence of some characters to think that she has an overactive imagination leads to a frustration of not being understood. For this reason, the character is likely to really resonate with young readers who are at an age when being misunderstood can be almost universal.

This installment of Winans’ literature feels a little different than some of her past writings. In some ways, the difference is enjoyable. For example, this book really draws the reader in to the main character’s feelings and personality in a personal way that her previous books have not. However, the other characters in this book felt over the top in some ways, seeming more like caricatures than believable characters. The reader never really feels that they get to know or care for any of the friends or relatives in this book in any personal or relatable way, and they stay squarely in the category of supporting cast. Overall, this book is a solid narrative that moves along at a nice pace, but it doesn’t have the depth that draws a reader in to hold their attention.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
