Book Review

Publisher's Note:

James Patterson presents a bold new heroine -- a cross between Katniss Everdeen and Annie Oakley: Serendipity Jones, the fastest sharpshooter in tomorrow's West. Seventeen-year-old Serendipity "Pity" Jones inherited two things from her mother: a pair of six shooters and perfect aim. She's been offered a life of fame and fortune in Cessation, a glittering city where lawlessness is a way of life. But the price she pays for her freedom may be too great . . . In this extraordinary debut from Lyndsay Ely, the West is once again wild after a Second Civil War fractures the U.S. into a broken, dangerous land. Pity's struggle against the dark and twisted underbelly of a corrupt city will haunt you long after the final bullet is shot.…

Gunslinger Girl

by Lyndsay Ely

Overall Book Review:

Gunslinger Girl is a fast-paced Western set in a richly imagined post-war future in which humanity exists in small, gritty towns and opulent, ordered cities. This dystopian future is imaginatively reminiscent of other popular action movies and books but maintains it individuality so well that is does not feel derivative. The book is filled with themes that will resonate with modern readers – themes such as economic and resource scarcity, class disparity, and the struggle for individuality in a world that has set roles that people are expected to fill.

The story of Gunslinger Girl is filled with action and intrigue, friendship and betrayal. The characters are colorful and full of personality, and the author skillfully introduces them in such a way that the reader is drawn to them and develops and empathy for many of them. Even the villains have traits that make them more multi-faceted humans and less one-dimensional bad guys. This graceful balance of character development and action makes Gunslinger Girl a book that is hard to put down.

About the Reviewer

My taste in literature leans heavily towards sci-fi, fantasy, and (my favorite) horror, and the latter can present some fairly murky waters for parents to let their children explore. I enjoy novels of both the standard and graphic varieties. Since those genres, and graphic novels in particular, tend to appeal to boys, I hope that I can help other Boy Mommies in their quest to find books that their little video gamers--I mean, future bibliophiles will read and enjoy. When I am not reading, I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, video games, and singing karaoke. I have a wonderful husband who lets me indulge my reading habit by sharing the housework and being a great dad to our genius kids and their faithful hound.
