Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Famous teen author Thistle Tate struggles to keep her biggest secret: the real identity of the author of her bestselling books. Thistle Tate is a glittering wunderkind--only seventeen, and a bestselling author of the wildly successful Lemonade Skies series, with the highly anticipated final book due to publish next year. She has diehard fans across the globe, flashy tours, and steep advances. And now she's finally started to date her best friend and next-door-neighbor, Liam, the only one who knows her deep dark secret: she's not the real author of the Lemonade Skies books. Thistle's guilt about lying intensifies after she meets the surprisingly charming Oliver, who introduces her to his super-fan little sister--but how can she have friendships based on deception? All she wants is for this last book to be written so she can be done with the ruse for good. Then with just two weeks left to deliver the manuscript to her agent and editor, a dramatic turn of events puts everything in jeopardy, and Thistle must grapple with her own identity. Is she a victim, a fraudster, or both? On top of that, Liam is increasingly jealous of Thistle's budding friendship with Oliver--a friendship that leaves Thistle more than a little confused about her own heart. As the book deadline looms closer, the stakes ever higher, a startling family truth comes to light, and it's only a matter of time before something gives--and Thistle's world becomes undone. For fans of Rainbow Rowell and E. Lockhart, this YA is the perfect summer read f…

The Undoing of Thistle Tate

by Katelyn Detweiler

Overall Book Review:

This delightful little novel will take you on a journey through the literary world and show you the trials and tribulations faced by many authors.  But it may also leave you asking, “Is Katelyn Detweiler really the author or is it all a giant hoax?”

The characters in this book are a little quirky, but instantly lovable.  Thistle, while having an extremely unique name, is a pretty average homeschooled seventeen-year-old girl.  With one exception.  She is the author of this amazing run-away success series of books and she isn’t so hot at coping with the fame.  Liam is the boy next door.  Literally.  He’s pretty much the stuff of every rom-com where boy next story is desired by girl, great friends, then become more, etc.  Kind of a vanilla character, but it works in the plotline.  Oliver rounds out the love triangle.  He’s a ginger (gotta love that, not enough redheads in fiction) who is wholly devoted to his sister in that great big brother protector way.

It’s usually a toss-up when reading a book written about authors.  Sometimes it’s great and sometimes there’s just too much writing process within the storyline that the plot is lost.  Undoing does a great job of balancing the writing process and players with a storyline that twists and turns and is about more than the words on the page.  I especially loved the snippets from the Lemonade Skies Series at the beginning of the chapters and (hint-hint) those snippets make me want to read the actual series.

The language is super simple in this book, so less mature readers should have an easy time turning page after page.  The love triangle probably makes a better topic for the high school crowd then middle school, but even mature middle schoolers can handle.  It’s a quick read and the ending comes to a great final conclusion that will leave you pleasantly satisfied.  Overall, it’s a good summer read in the young adult genre.

About the Reviewer

I am a full-time mom, full-time wife, and overtime reader. I have been an avid reader for as long as anyone can remember. It must run in the family because both my mother and grandmother are also voracious readers and often pass books back and forth. Almost any genre can spark my interest, but I often go in streaks, reading a bunch of books from one genre, then switching to another for a while and back again.
