Book Review

Publisher's Note:

A poignant novel of desperation, escape, and survival across the U.S.-Mexico border, inspired by current events. Pulga has his dreams. Chico has his grief. Pequeña has her pride. And these three teens have one another. But none of them have illusions about the town they've grown up in and the dangers that surround them. Even with the love of family, threats lurk around every corner. And when those threats become all too real, the trio knows they have no choice but to run: from their country, from their families, from their beloved home. Crossing from Guatemala through Mexico, they follow the route of La Bestia, the perilous train system that might deliver them to a better life--if they are lucky enough to survive the journey. With nothing but the bags on their backs and desperation drumming through their hearts, Pulga, Chico, and Pequeña know there is no turning back, despite the unknown that awaits them. And the darkness that seems to follow wherever they go. In this striking portrait of lives torn apart, the plight of migrants at the U.S. southern border is brought to light through poignant, vivid storytelling. An epic journey of danger, resilience, heartache, and hope.…

We Are Not From Here

by Jenny Torres Sanchez

Overall Book Review:

This was a title I hesitated to pick up because I knew it would be painful, but some stories deserve to be heard.  We Are Not From Here is unequivocally one of those stories.  Strap in and prepare for a raw, poignant look at the unforgiving and unrelenting realities of living in an unimaginably dangerous environment of constant fear that drives one to take an inconceivable, desperate, treacherous, and almost impossible flight towards an uncertain future.  The first part of this novel clearly paints the palpable danger three young teens experience in their small town in Guatemala, and it is a critical part of the story.  The later part of the book follows not only their physical journey, but also the psychological and emotional journey.  Each is changed uniquely by the experience with different outcomes.  Filled with rich metaphors and one character’s otherworldly visions, there is textured symbolism to also appreciate.

Although this book is fiction, I was deeply moved by the narrative, which I believe is all too real.  This is a challenging read emotionally, but I throw down the gauntlet to older young adult readers and adults to not pass this difficult topic by.  This is a book I didn’t want to pick up, but once I did, I was unable to put it down. Some stories deserve to be heard.

About the Reviewer

An accountant and CPA by profession, I found myself a book reviewer for Squeaky Clean Reads by happenstance. When the opportunity came to transform that website into Compass Book Ratings, I was excited to seize it and meld my business background with my love of books. As the mother of three teenage sons, I have read a large number of children and young adult books and I believe that there is great value in a content review service. As much as we would love to read everything our children read, there just isn’t enough time. I also appreciate being able to select books for myself that are really worth my precious and limited reading time. I believe there is a book out there for everyone–they just have to find it!
