Book Review

Publisher's Note:

Meet Quentin, a middle school football star from Chicago... Sarah, an Upstate New York girls' hockey team stand-out... Ben, a horse lover from the Pacific Northwest... And Cat, an artistic bird watcher from California. The four have nothing in common except for the head injuries that land them in an elite brain-science center in the Florida Everglades. It's known as the best in the world, but as days pass, the kids begin to suspect that they are subjects in an experiment that goes far beyond treating concussions....and threatens their very identities. Wake Up Missing

by Kate Messner

Overall Book Review:

Wake Up Missing by Kate Messner is a middle grade science thriller filled with suspense and action, perhaps a bit like a Michael Crichton novel for middle graders.  Male and female characters ages twelve to thirteen give this book wide appeal.  The initial science plot premise appears a bit of a stretch, but the author’s note provides great insight to the ideas and inspiration behind elements in the book and some web references for further information.  Although resolving the major crisis of the book, some issues are left open and this is a good thing; it gives the book an element of realism and leaves the reader with a few things to think about.  Wake Up Missing is a brisk-paced read that you don’t have to be a science geek to enjoy!

About the Reviewer

An accountant and CPA by profession, I found myself a book reviewer for Squeaky Clean Reads by happenstance. When the opportunity came to transform that website into Compass Book Ratings, I was excited to seize it and meld my business background with my love of books. As the mother of three teenage sons, I have read a large number of children and young adult books and I believe that there is great value in a content review service. As much as we would love to read everything our children read, there just isn’t enough time. I also appreciate being able to select books for myself that are really worth my precious and limited reading time. I believe there is a book out there for everyone–they just have to find it!
