Overall Book Review:

The Mark of Athena, Book 3 in The Heroes of Olympus Series, has a curse on it that makes you keep reading.  This would be really annoying if it wasn’t such a good book.  Riordan once again delivers a wonderful tale full of action, mythology, and humor.  He sends heroes to explore new ground for the series, as well as giving the readers a refreshing change of scenery.  In addition to this, Riordan does manage to have a modestly unpredictable plot that keeps readers thoroughly engaged through a combination of distinct characters and comic combinations of old mythology and the modern era.  Lovers of the Percy Jackson Series will not be disappointed!


Content Analysis:

Profanity/Language: 1 religious exclamation.

Violence/Gore: Characters threaten each other multiple times; there are several battles involving swords, bows, miscellaneous weapons, and several mythological monsters that result in injury, death (mythical creatures), and explosions, but no descriptions of blood or gore.

Sex/Nudity:  Characters kiss and cuddle on several occasions.

There is a god of wine, but he drinks Coke and Pepsi.

I enjoy reading adventure books like Gary Paulsen’s The Hatchet, probably because I like to lead an active life. Outside of reading, I camp, hike, run cross country and work on a farm, and a lot of these experiences let me appreciate the content of a good book, as well as the unlimited possibilities that can happen between its covers.
