Suitcase Sisters number three, Shortbread in the Highlands, is enjoyable and reads like a fictionalized travel blog. The author, Robin Jones Gunn, has set this expectation with her previous books and this one follows the pattern. Two women end up on an adventure in Scotland and have wonderful experiences. They try lots of local and classically Scottish things.
One of the characters is struggling with a work situation and another is struggling to find joy in her life’s purpose. The best part is the characters have fun together and don’t allow these challenges to become the dominating focus of the story. The focus is on the people the women meet and the relationships they form. Nora and Allie are funny and interesting.
In some stories, you don’t really care if things work out the way you hope, but in this one, you are really hoping the characters get certain things. Enjoy a bit of armchair tourism and romance. Perhaps prepare your favorite warm beverage ahead of time so you can truly immerse yourself.
