Leadership from the Mission Control Room to the Boardroom by Paul Sean Hill is one-part insider’s view to NASA operations, one-part case study, and one-part syllabus for business leaders looking to grow their team.  The first part of the book invests heavily in explaining how things worked in the Mission Control Room and their culture.  Although this is provided as a foundation for understanding the transformation explored later in the book, it was a bit detailed for a general business reader; however, readers interested in the inner workings of NASA will enjoy this section.  Mr. Hill then delves into the process by which MOD transformed itself–even providing in detail a list of other business literature that was used to bring about change in management and ultimately the organization.

One of the valuable lessons from this book is that transformation in a business environment takes effort, dedication, and time.  The book is laid out in clearly delineated sections and the quotes from various NASA personnel are nice gems.  There are definitely business truths in this book and many take-aways for business leaders.  In fact, this is a book that probably needs more than one sitting to fully absorb.
