Overall Book Review:

Alanna: The First Adventure is a fun and feisty tale of a girl with a dream.  Not only does she have a dream but she has all the spunk and spirit to attain it!  She learns that success comes if you truly work hard for what you want, and she has to work hard to keep up with all those boys!  I really enjoyed the story, but many parts felt rushed and brushed over.  I suppose that might be in part because there are more in the series, and the fact that this is aimed toward a fairly young audience.  Another one of those books that I wish I would have known about when I was 12 or 13!  There is danger, friendship, hard work, magic and mystery galore.  A fast read and one that I could easily recommend to my young friends.

Content Analysis:

There are a handful of mild swear words.  Many of those are oaths relating to the ‘gods’ of the characters in the story.

There is, of course, a lot of fighting, as Alanna is training to be a knight.  There is both sword fighting and fist to fist combat.  A few different characters are beat up.  One character enjoys bullying, teasing and picking on others smaller than he.

As far as sexual content, the main character is a girl in a man’s world—a young girl—and knows nothing about growing up.  There is almost an entire chapter devoted to when she finds she’s bleeding.  She goes to a healer and they have a long discussion.  It’s not crude, graphic, or in depth.  It’s just the very basic facts.

Mature Subject Matter:

The mature themes include fighting, lying, magic, sorcery, and thieving.  I would have no problem giving this to a 12-14 year old girl.

About the Reviewer

I read anything and everything. I love the smell of books. My kids giggle at me when I open a new box of books from Amazon and I inhale the new pages and rub the shiny new spine against my face! 🙂 My husband just rolls his eyes at me and is grateful he has me on a budget! 🙂
