A mysterious and powerful fantasy adventure from a Schneider Award winner

In the near future, most of the population of the United States has been destroyed by the plague. The few remaining survivors live in colonies on the barrier islands off the East Coast. In one colony near Cape Hatteras, almost all the members have elemental powers and can control wind, water, earth, and fire. All but sixteen-year-old Thomas. When the Guardians, the powerful adult leaders, are kidnapped by pirates seeking to take over their colony, it is up to Thomas and a small group of teens to save them and preserve the mysteries of the island.

Fast action, strategy, and mystery churn together into a bold and fresh fantasy from an award-winning author.

Overall Review:

I haven't read a modern, exciting, adventure novel like Elemental in a very long time.  It has an engaging and intriguing plot that gives it an air of mystery and allows the readers to live the characters' confusion as they discover secrets about their lives as they try to conquer the men that threaten them.  What I began to appreciate about the novel, as questions began to be answered, is that author Antony John crafts the story in a way that the reader can solve the mystery for themselves, but not without great difficulty.  My only frustration with this novel is that many mysteries would be solved only to bring new questions to mind.  A little more resolution would have been nice, but that may just be personal preference.  Overall, an excellent adventure novel that everybody should read!

Content Analysis:

Profanity/Language: 4 mild obscenities.

Violence/Gore:  Several characters are hit with oars or shocked with electricity.  There are fights involving fists and guns that result in severe injury, and death is implied in many instances but is never explicitly stated.  Characters are threatened several times and suffer non-life threatening injuries.  There are several second hand reports of violence, one very long and graphic.   There is a blood splattered wall on a ship that is mentioned several times.

Sex/Nudity: None

Mature Subject Matter:

Trusting elders, social outcasts, loss of parents.

Alcohol / Drug Use:

None
