Overall Review:

It's no wonder that this series is being dubbed “the Nigerian Harry Potter”.  Full of magical realism, endearing camaraderie, and creepily exciting adventures, fans of J.K. Rowling and Rick Riordan will no doubt devour this spicy arrangement.

Award-winning author Nnedi Okorafor brilliantly parallels her books with popular Euro-fantasy, but she is no copycat. This fresh and funky series is only comparable because it demonstrates the best possible aspects an author can create within a book:  an engaging connection between reader and characters with an investment in the characters' predicament and outcome, all within a captivating environment.

This sequel begins with an amusing brief synopsis of the previous book, making it a smooth start for readers who are new to the series, or those who need a refresher of Sunny's past year.

Sunny's commencement within the secret Leopard Society ceases to slow down as she and her friends are faced with a new and perhaps even more dangerous threat. While Sunny's revelation of what she is and the gifts she possesses have her feeling in-between worlds, all uncertainties have to be left aside as decisions and action come to the forefront.

The introduction of new mythical creatures composes a boisterously fun and compelling affiliation with the main characters. These authentic, dynamic characters, both friend and foe, create a fascinating need to find out how the story develops.

The lively world building accompanied with how perceptible the author makes the West African culture within both the lamb and leopard societies, is a festivity of absolute craziness that is unbelievably believable.

This book comes across as less brutal than its predecessor because most of the violent incidents are either reports or magical. Encompassed with cultural folklore, this is such an enjoyable read that if it weren't for the mild language (please see content review below), I would readily recommend this to kids as young as 10- 11 years old.

This sequel delivers a much more satisfying ending and is jam-packed with gratifying conclusions. But don't call it quits just yet, questions still loom, posing the query, will there be a third installment?

Be prepared. Incredible juju is about to take place once you open this book.
