Publisher's Note:

Mira is not like the other Glittering Court girls. She is a war refugee, cast out of her home country and thrust into another, where she has learned to fight against the many injustices around her. For some, the Glittering Court offers a chance at a life they’ve only ever dreamed of, one of luxury, glamour, and leisure. But for Mira, it’s simply a means to an end. In the new world, she plans to earn off her marriage contract price, and finally be free.

Mira pitches herself as an asset to one of the passengers on board the ship: the sardonic and aloof Grant Elliot, whom she’s discovered is a spy for the prestigious McGraw Agency—and her ticket to buying her freedom. His cover blown, Grant has little choice but to take her on. Mira applies herself by day, learning the etiquette and customs that will help to earn her anonymity. By night, she dons a mask and slips into the city, fighting injustice and corruption on her own terms—and impressing Grant with her extraordinary abilities and insights into a brewing rebellion. But the rebellion isn’t all they’re fighting…

Neither of them can ignore the attraction burning between them—an attraction so powerful, it threatens to unravel everything Mira’s worked so hard for. With freedom finally within her grasp, can Mira risk it all for love?

Overall Review:

Dining and dancing entwine with plucky pirating in YA author Richelle Mead's Midnight Jewel (The Glittering Court #2).

The second installment in the trilogy follows the same timeline as in the first book, but from the perspective of a different character. Readers have the opportunity to accompany the protagonist, Mira, a refugee who is pursuing a path to reunite with her brother. Her course of action ignites risky behavior and clandestine companionships that are both captivating and entertaining.

The beginning of the book is incredibly rushed and takes for granted that readers will automatically discern the culture, this will make it hard for readers who are new to the series to keep up.

Although this book is presented as a standalone, I would disagree with that assessment. Without reading the first book, The Glittering Court (The Glittering Court #1), I believe readers will have a difficult time grasping what the Glittering Court is. Not only that, but the first book gives readers an introduction to the religions, regions, and various nationalities that are referred to, thus, bestowing readers with a better comprehension of the world the author has built.

It's not until about 100 pages in that the plot starts to develop into something substantial that readers can get excited and invested in, even if the pacing is erratic.

What can readers expect? Exhilarating action and sizzling lusty romance, passionate fight and love scenes with complex characters that are at odds with what they want and how they aim to attain it.

This novel may be categorized as a fantasy, but it reads more like a romantic regency novel with nouveau elements. If you want more swashbuckling romance, then be sure to read  Rook by Sharon Cameron.
