Overall Review:

Bestselling author Gene Luen Yang creates a delightful read for elementary and middle school readers with Secret Coders, a lively graphic novel that incorporates interesting mathematical elements and curious happenings surrounding a very peculiar school.

Young protagonist Hopper is a spunky sprite, and although a bit abrasive, her narration is entertaining and endearing. Her plight, to fit in at a new school she doesn't even want to be at, is unsuccessful to say the least, and it's only at random that she is able to make an unlikely alliance with algorithmic-minded Eni.

For some, math will always be a mystery, but for fellow students, Hopper and Eni, uncovering a binary code at their spooky school uncovers a puzzle that entails great adventure.

Fantastic illustrations by Mike Holmes entreats readers to the fun world which the author is establishing, and with blasts of green riddled throughout the drawings, readers will enjoy the escape from the normal black and white portrayals.

A short but gripping tale, the first novel in the Secret Coders series will have readers counting down the days until they can get their hands on the sequel.
