Overall Review:

“Some books should be tasted some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly.”(Inkheart, pg. 8)

Inkheart is one to be devoured.  One can’t help but turn the pages as they follow Meggie, a twelve year old girl whose safe world is turned upside down when she learns her father has the magical ability to read things out of books and they must finally make a stand against the villain he read out of a book years before.

This book is wonderfully written.  It contains not only full characters, individual and whole despite being eccentric, but a perfectly blended adventure.  Combining the real world and a fantasy one while leaving both worlds still feeling authentic is no easy feat, but Cornelia Funke manages to do just that.  All the while weaving in dozens of other literary quotes and references from Treasure Island to The Steadfast Tin Soldier and everything in between, which merge seamlessly with the story she is telling.

Inkheart is an epic adventure that has something to offer every reader.  However, the novel’s tone is at times dark and intense, thus the age recommendation of 12+.
